MMU's Enactus team at Nationals

Mount Mercy University’s Enactus team earned a Sweet 16 spot for the fourth year in a row at the National Exposition in Kansas City, Missouri. Two students from the Enactus team were in the running for the Project Leader of the Year Award and the Executive Leader of the Year Award. Another team member was a finalist for  the Jules & Gwenn Knapp Scholarship. The MMU Enactus team is one of four teams that have achieved a Sweet 16 spot for the last four years. Out of 400 teams nationally and over 80 teams that competed, Enactus placed within the Top 12 at the National Expo.
Sister Maurita Soukup

Sr. Maurita Soukup received honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Creighton University during commencement proceedings on May 18. Sr. Soukup has worked in health care ministry for over 55 years and as a Sister of Mercy for 53 years. She currently serves as a health trustee and nurse consultant/researcher and collaborates with two boards of regional health care systems.

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 2018-19 track and field season came to a close this weekend as eight individuals competed at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.The Marathon was the highlight event as Vanessa Cortes (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.) earned All-American honors for her third-place finish with a time of 3:10:51.20, breaking the school record by nearly 10 minutes.

The Iowa Catholic Collegiate Association (ICCA) will host Connections, an inaugural summer institute for member institution faculty, May 28–29 at Mount Mercy University. The institute will focus on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Members from each of the six Iowa Catholic member institutions will be in attendance, including Loras College, Clarke University, St. Ambrose University, Mount Mercy University, Mercy College of Health Sciences, and Briar Cliff University.

Degrees were bestowed upon 432 undergraduate students and 135 graduate students during Mount Mercy University’s 2019 Commencement Ceremony, held Sunday, May 19, at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. Celebrating another record-breaking year, Mount Mercy graduated 61 undergraduate online program students.
Carol Tyx

Dr. Carol Tyx, professor of English, was awarded professor emeritus status at the Mount Mercy University 2019 Commencement Ceremony on May 19 after being a member of the English faculty for 19 years. Tyx, along with a colleague in the English Department, was instrumental in the creation of the MMU Prison Book Club, a service-learning project in which Mount Mercy students lead book discussions with inmates at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. Tyx served as coordinator of the Partnership Program, a first-year experience for freshman students.

Dr. Mary Tarbox, professor of nursing and dean of the Martin-Herold College of Nursing & Health, was awarded professor emeritus status at the Mount Mercy University 2019 Commencement Ceremony on May 19 after being a leader and member of the nursing faculty for for 42 years.

Mount Mercy University graduate Wyatt O’Connor received the Sister Mary Catherine McAuley Award during Mount Mercy’s 2019 Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 19. O’Connor, a native of Anamosa, Iowa, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education and math.

Mount Mercy University graduate Hang Nguyen, a native of Vietnam, received the Sister Mary Frances Warde Award during the 2019 Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 19. Hang complete actuarial science and accounting studies in December 2018.

Mount Mercy University recognized Ashley "AshCash" Sally with the prestigious President’s Award at Honors Convocation on Friday, May 17. Sally was also chosen as the 2019 Commencement Student Speaker. The President’s Award is given each year to a graduating student who has demonstrated a strong academic record, positive engagement in the campus community and service to others during their tenure at Mount Mercy. This award honors people in circumstances that illustrate the best in student tenacity, dedication, compassion and heart.

Mount Mercy University is proud to announce a new English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement area for teachers as part of MMU’s Masters of Arts in Education (MAEd) program. The need for teachers with ESL continues to be a shortage area in Iowa. Mount Mercy’s program prepares graduate students to complete this 23-credit hour endorsement in 15 months. Additionally, a pathway to completing the core research courses leads to the master’s degree. Classes begin June 3, 2019.

Mount Mercy University will hold Commencement 2019 exercises on Sunday, May 19, at 1 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. Mount Mercy will confer degrees upon approximately 380 undergraduate students and 170 students in graduate programs. Two members of faculty will be given emeritus status: Professor of English Carol Tyx, Ph.D. and Dean of the Martin-Herold College of Nursing & Health Mary Tarbox, Ed.D.
Market at the Mount

Mount Mercy University’s popular spring Market at the Mount is set for Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m.–2 p.m., at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. The student-organized event will bring more than 40 local vendors to the outdoor complex, located at 651 19th Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402. Open to the public, vendors include services, artisans, crafters and food vendors. Products include crocheted items, baked goods, handmade soaps, home decor and more.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mount Mercy Softball Team ended their 2019 season with a third-place finish in the Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division with a 21-15 record and finished fourth in the Heart Championship after battling back through the elimination bracket to end with an overall record of 32-22. The Mustangs received a handful of Heart of America Athletic Conference accolades.
