Position Description

Mount Mercy University is seeking candidates to fill the Director of Residence Life role on campus. This position reports to the Dean of Students and is a full-time, live-on role.

The director reports to the Dean of Students. The Director of Residence Life is part of the department’s senior management team for Mount Mercy University and full-time live-on role. The director is responsible for the overall administration of the residence-life program with the capacity to house nearly 600 on campus students. Additionally, the director is to support and develop the professional and paraprofessional residence life staff members employed by the Department of Residence Life and through their supervision to develop a vibrant residential community that contributes to our student’s academic success and student engagement.

General areas of responsibility include community development, program development, supervision of professional staff and as well as supervision of the resident assistants, crisis intervention, emergency planning, oversight of the residence hall conduct processes, room selection process, committee development/involvement, recruitment selection planning for professional and paraprofessional staff, and management of the residential curriculum.

The Director of Residence Life will be the lead conduct professional on campus to support students in understanding and adhering to our community standards in partnership with the Residence Life team and student Residential Assistants. The ideal candidate should possess a familiarity with the conduct process on a college campus along with developmental and physical needs of young adults in the process of mentoring them as they progress to achieve their educational goals in a residential setting. Preference will be given to candidates that have experience as it relates to restorative justice and have demonstrated experience in residence life at a private liberal arts university.

We are looking to hire with the purposes of diversifying our Student Services team to meet the changing demographics of our student population. The right team member will promote and represent the Student Services area and Mount Mercy University in a professional manner at all times as they partner with both on and off campus community members. They will be asked to mentor students from a diverse background and support the strong tradition of our vibrant learning and living committee while contributing to the Catholic heritage as well as Sisters of Mercy tradition of educating the whole person. This position requires an individual to be proactive and take the lead on initiatives in collaboration with both the Student Services team and greater Mount Mercy University community.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Successful experience in supporting residential student populations.
  • Demonstrated experience and credentials to effectively manage the student conduct process.
  • Proven experience providing programming and education to address well-being within a residential community environment.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in managing student health and wellbeing initiatives.
  • High level of initiative, planning, communication, and organizational skills including demonstrated abilities to properly mentor and educate a residential student population.
  • Extensive experience using positive personal relationship and community building skills to motivate exceptional performance with student leaders and community members.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and lead programs.

Education:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
  2. A master’s degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred.

Experience:

  1. At least four years of relevant experience working in higher education at a college or university.

Licenses:

  1. A valid driver’s license is required.
