MMU students win two of three Eastern Iowa Human Resource Association scholarships

EIHRM award

Mount Mercy University students Cassandra Forsythe and Lauren Mercil were awarded Eastern Iowa Human Resource Association (EIHRA) scholarships for scholastic attitude, good character, leadership qualities, and well-rounded personal development.

Forsythe, a sophomore psychology major with a minor in human resource management, is a member of Mount Mercy’s Students in Human Resource Management (SIHRM) club. She took part in the university’s Project Connect program, is on the women’s bowling team and involved in music ensembles, and holds jobs on and off campus.

“Cassandra understands the value of working hard,” said Tracy Tunwall, SIHRM advisor and associate professor of business. “She has overcome a lot and continues to make a great impression on anyone she meets.”

Mercil, a junior double majoring in human resource management and sustainability/corporate social responsibility and minoring in psychology, is current president of SIHRM and holds a student worker position in the business department.

“Lauren has a positive attitude and a real interest in the topics in HR,” Tunwall said. “I can always count on her to meet deadlines and be on time. My experience with Lauren has been excellent and resulted in her being offered the business department student worker position this year.”

The women were awarded two of three EIHRA scholarships, each valued at $750, during the Nov. 13 EIHRA meeting. The third went to a University of Iowa student.

The Eastern Iowa Human Resource Association is an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management, the world’s largest HR professional society, representing 300,000 members in more than 165 countries. For nearly seven decades, the Society has been the leading provider of resources serving the needs of HR professionals and advancing the practice of human resource management.

Mount Mercy offers the human resource management major in traditional, accelerated and online formats, as well as a HR concentration in the MBA program. Undergraduate degree programs are endorsed through SHRM national.
