MMU to hold Commencement 2019 exercises May 19

MMU Grads

Mount Mercy University will hold Commencement 2019 exercises on Sunday, May 19, at 1 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Mount Mercy will confer degrees upon approximately 380 undergraduate students and 170 students in graduate programs. Two members of faculty will be given emeritus status: Professor of English Carol Tyx, Ph.D. and Dean of the Martin-Herold College of Nursing & Health Mary Tarbox, Ed.D.

Ashley Sally, a native of Milwaukee, was chosen as the student speaker. Sally is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English. As president of the Black Student Union, Sally implemented the club’s first toy drive and led efforts for the annual Soul Food Dinner. She was also named to the Dean’s List, was a member of the Director of International Student Success Hiring Committee, volunteered with the MMU Prison Book Club, and helped with sandbagging during the 2016 Cedar Rapids flood. Sally was especially interested in broadening her professional skillset and held several on- and off-campus jobs, including positions with the Office of Marketing & Communications, JumpStart day camp, Residence Life, Lundy Fitness Center, the women’s basketball team, Milwaukee YMCA Day Camp, Jane Boyd, and Target.
