Four new Board of Trustees members named at June meeting

Four new members were named to the Mount Mercy University Board of Trustees during the June meeting: Molly Altorfer, Dr. Melanie Giesler-Spellman, Sr. Susan O’Connor and Lisa Pitz.

“We’re proud to present these four, fantastic individuals as new members of our board of trustees,” said University President Laurie Hamen. “We look forward to their guidance and contributions to the future success of Mount Mercy.”

Molly Altorfer is a partner in The Common Sense Collective, a full-service marketing and advertising agency. She has worked as a freelance writer and marketing consultant for Corridor-area employers, including Iowa Women Lead Change and Mount Mercy University. She was honored by the Corridor Business Journal as a 2019 Woman of Influence.

Altorfer holds a Master of Arts in journalism and mass communication with a concentration in public relations from Kent State University. She is a cum laude graduate of Gustavus Aldophus college in St. Peter, Minnesota, with degrees in communication studies and political science. She serves on the board of directors at Tanager Place, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, the Cedar Rapids Country Club and Cedar Valley Montessori School. She has also been a member of the Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation Board of Directors.

Dr. Melanie Giesler-Spellman serves as an otolaryngologist at Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa, P.C., in Cedar Rapids. Previously, she was a physician at Medical Associates in Clinton, Iowa.

Dr. Giesler-Spellman holds a Bachelor of Science from Mount Mercy and earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University. She has experience serving on boards and committees such as Doctors Hospital of Stark County Trauma Committee, the Ohio Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Otolaryngologic Allergy, American Academy of Osteopathic Otolaryngology and the Gateway Surgery Center Board of Trustees.

Sister Susan O’Connor is the vice president for mission integration at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. She has worked for the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center and Sacred Heart Parish in Oelwein.

Sr. O’Connor holds a Bachelor of Arts in social work from Mount Mercy, a master’s in social work from St. Louis University, a master’s in healthcare mission from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis and a Certificate in Health Care Ethics from the Center for Health Care Ethics also in St. Louis. Current board appointments include Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Mercy East Community Region Mercy Health System in St. Louis, Archdiocese of Dubuque Medical-Moral Commission, Archdiocese of Dubuque Catholic Charities, Linn County Community Services and Mercy Medical Center Foundation.

Lisa Pitz is the director of Cedar Rapids Accounting Shared Service at Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids. Pitz organizes the Collins Aerospace accounting and finance rotation and internship programs, where she demonstrates her passion for early career development and recruiting diverse talent. Pitz holds a BBA in accounting and an MBA from the University of Iowa.

The Mount Mercy University Board of Trustees is made up of 32 members and led by Board Chair Charlie Rohde, president of King’s Material in Cedar Rapids.
