Fall Faculty Series 2019Eating in the Margins: The Politics and Experience of Dumpster Diving

Dr. Joseph Hendryx | Assistant Professor of English

With the abundance of food available in the United States, why do some people suffer from hunger while others make an intentional choice to scavenge uneaten food from the trash? What motivates these self-described Freegans? Whether from choice or necessity, the phenomenon of dumpster diving says a lot about who gets to eat and who gets to waste food in America. Beyond understanding the foundational practice and legal implications of dumpster diving, this discussion will explore ideologies, movements and events intersecting with the culture of dumpster diving and freeganism— including late capitalism, green consumerism, anarchism, and the looming climate catastrophe.
