Profile: Iowa prison educator finds value in investing in improvement High school equivalency instructor Andy Hayward helps offenders learn CEDAR RAPIDS — Andy Hayward will tell you that if each student is interested in some aspect of a lesson he’s teaching, it can go a long way toward engaging the entire class. The 39-year-old Cedar Rapids resident learned that while studying for his teacher’s degree and while teaching high school students for nine years. But now, that lesson has been reinforced in his current classroom.

Students published in literary journals at Mount Mercy, Coe, Cornell and Kirkwood will gather to read and discuss their work on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. in Mount Mercy University’s Betty Cherry Heritage Hall. The students—from many different areas of study—hope to engage and expand the local creative community with the event, dubbed College Students Create: Celebrate Corridor Literary Journals. Mount Mercy students will read from their literary journal, Paha Review.
