Degrees were bestowed upon 381 undergraduate students and 172 graduate students during Mount Mercy University’s 2018 Commencement Ceremony, held Sunday, May 20, at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. Celebrating a record-breaking year, Mount Mercy graduated 60 undergraduate online program students.

Jan Handler, EdD, was awarded professor emeritus status at the 2018 Mount Mercy University commencement ceremony on May 20 after being a member of the education faculty and provost for 31 years. Under Jan’s leadership, Mount Mercy strengthened its traditional academic programs and launched numerous new programs, including online bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the university’s first-ever doctoral programs. She was the first Feld Chair and is the author of numerous publications.
John Robeson

John Robeson, PhD, was awarded professor emeritus status at the 2018 Mount Mercy University commencement ceremony on May 20 after being a member of the mathematics faculty for 16 years. John began teaching at Mount Mercy in 2002 after completing his PhD in mathematics from the University of Iowa (his second career). John’s first career included working for Kewanee Boiler Corporation and Amana Appliances as an engineer for nearly 25 years. During that time, he earned several patents and awards for designing microwave ovens and other cooking products.

After 36 years as a member of the biology faculty at Mount Mercy University, Neil Bernstein, PhD, was awarded professor emeritus status at the 2018 commencement ceremony, May 20. During Neil’s tenure as professor of biology, he inspired students to learn more about the environment and care for the earth. He developed the outdoor conservation major, and his teaching experience extends to other areas in the curriculum, including portal, capstone, and honors courses.

Mount Mercy graduate Kennidee DeVilbiss received the Mary Catherine McAuley Award during Mount Mercy’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 20. DeVilbiss, a native of Ossian, Iowa, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in psychology.

Mount Mercy University graduate Jordyn Lehman, a native of Iowa City, Iowa, received the Mary Frances Warde Award during the 2018 commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 20. Jordyn graduated with a Bachelor of Science.

Mount Mercy University recognized Jessica Hiney with the prestigious President’s Award at Honors Convocation on Friday, May 18. The President’s Award is given each year to a graduating student who has demonstrated a strong academic record, positive engagement in the campus community and service to others during their tenure at Mount Mercy. This award honors people in circumstances that illustrate the best in student tenacity, dedication, compassion and heart.

A renowned leader in nursing education, Mount Mercy University has announced plans for significant nursing program investment, thanks in part to a $200,000 grant awarded by the Carver Charitable Trust. This generous award brings the Carver Charitable Trust’s lifetime support of Mount Mercy to over $1 million and will fund enhancements to simulation and assessment labs and enable implementation of a telehealth delivery system.

Hadzic ended up in Cedar Rapids after fleeing Sarajevo CEDAR RAPIDS — It’s been said “there is always more to a person than meets the eye.” This is true of Xavier boys’ soccer coach [and Mustang men's soccer coach]  Amir Hadzic. Immigrating to America from a war-torn communist Yugoslavia, Hadzic has suffered and seen some true atrocities in his lifetime. Through all he has seen, he attributes soccer to giving him all of his lucky breaks in life.

Mount Mercy University’s first-ever day of giving, #HaveMercyGiveMercy, surpassed all goals and garnered Mustang pride throughout the community. Aimed at earning 501 donors on May 1, the day ended with 670 donors or 133 percent of the goal—a record number of donors in 24 hours for Mount Mercy.
