GAZETTE — Mount Mercy University this week is unveiling its first-ever college thanks to a “transformational” gift supporting its nursing and health programs. The Martin-Herold College of Nursing & Health honors the couple making it possible: Mount Mercy trustee Ron Herold and his wife and Mount Mercy alumna, Paula Martin Herold. The new college will serve as an umbrella for all the university’s undergraduate and graduate nursing and health care programs.

Two Sisters of Mercy who entered the Sisters of Mercy Community in Cedar Rapids decades ago will be celebrating their commitments—one in Cedar Rapids—this year. Sister Therese Ann Spitz, of Cedar Rapids, will be celebrating 70 years with Sisters of Mercy later this month, while Sister Rita Waters, who has been ministering in Washington, D.C. for 28 years, will be celebrating a 50-year commitment.

A disaster continues to unfold in Guatemala after a massive volcanic eruption and some students from Mount Mercy University are witnessing it first-hand. Jamarco Clark and the group of seven students from Mount Mercy University are safe. They were exploring a village a couple hours away from Volcán de Fuego when it erupted this past weekend.
