Tradition of Mercy
Kathy Harriott ’87 is one of many Mustangs in her family. She knows the benefits of a Mount Mercy education, and does all she can to help give back to her alma mater.
MMU: You attended Mount Mercy, as did your children. What does a Mount Mercy education mean to you and your family?
KH: I’m proud to say my family has a strong history with Mount Mercy. We have had four family members and three generations of Mount Mercy graduates—my mom, daughter, sister-in-law and myself. We chose Mount Mercy for the well-respected reputation for providing a quality Catholic education in a beautiful, small, safe environment within a mid-size community offering various cultural opportunities. The student to professor ratio allowed for one-on-one experiences with our professors, providing assistance when needed. For our two nurses, Mount Mercy offered a fantastic clinical environment for learning in our local hospitals. We became involved in the campus in our own personal ways, and are proud Mustangs displaying our Mount Mercy degrees. And we value staying connected and giving back to the school as well.

MMU: You continue to be involved in the Mount Mercy community by serving as a Project Connect mentor. What’s your favorite part about the Project Connect program?
KH: I support and believe in the Project Connect program mission. I was very proud to explain the program to my peers in the community when this program kicked off. I have enjoyed getting to know several students while being a mentor, and have continued a valuable friendship with one of my special students. We communicate regularly, sharing life updates, and I do what I can to support her educational experience and career preparation.

MMU: What’s your favorite Mount Mercy memory?
KH: I can think of many Mount Mercy memories that make me smile or chuckle. There are two memories that stand out the most. First, I remember being so very so proud while watching my daughter during her nursing pinning ceremony before graduation her senior year. It was absolutely beautiful! Secondly, in January 1985 during my sophomore year, we took a trip to Europe as part of our interim class with our business professor. We toured businesses in each of the four cities we visited, meeting with leadership teams and learning about their industries. Our group of approximately 22 was able to enjoy some leisure time taking sleigh rides or skilling in the Alps, attending plays, enjoying the unique cuisine local restaurants, etc. And to top that off, as soon as we returned from being gone for two and a half weeks, my then boyfriend and now husband, asked me to marry him!
MMU: Did the connections you made while at Mount Mercy help you as you were just beginning your career?
KH: The connections I made while at Mount Mercy did indeed help me as I began my fulfilling career in customer service. My connections ensured I was well prepared for my first professional experience with a strong resume and interview skills. I was able to dive in and apply my educational experience to my career, and call upon my connections when I needed advice or guidance. As my career grew, I was able to give back both with my time, talent and treasure. I am lucky to still live and work in Cedar Rapids so I’m able to be participate in campus activities and events.

MMU: Do you have any advice for current Mount Mercy students who have a desire to enter the business world after graduation?
KH: My advice to Mount Mercy students who are interested in entering the business world is that there are so many opportunities available for you. Your learning does not stop when you receive your diploma. You will apply your Mount Mercy experience to your work environment and the learning never stops. Be open to change. Work hard.
