Teeing Up a Bright Future at Mount Mercy
Mount Mercy University offers a unique opportunity for students to pursue both academic and extracurricular passions, and Simeon Jauhiainen ’26 is a prime example of this.
A native of Cedar Rapids, Simeon was initially drawn to Mount Mercy because it keeps him close to family, but what truly won him over was the possibility of continuing his passion for golf. He was ecstatic when Mount Mercy offered him a spot on the team—an opportunity he simply couldn't resist.
“One of my favorite memories so far from my time at Mount Mercy is just hanging around my teammates and traveling with them to golf tournaments,” Simeon said. “I’ve made some really awesome connections with them.”
Academically, Simeon had a pretty good idea as to what he wanted to do well before enrolling on the Hill. He’s always been creative and had an interest in utilizing technology, so he made the decision to major in computer science.
During his first semester, he took an Introduction to Data Science course that helped set him on his academic path. That course sparked his interest because it seamlessly combined his passions for both computer science and math, ultimately inspiring him to pursue a double major with mathematics. Given the landscape of today’s job market, Simeon said it’s especially exciting to have the newly launched data science program as an academic option at Mount Mercy.
“The new data science program is setting a good foundation and tracking in the right direction for students to learn the important skills they will need to be successful in the workforce,” he said.

Simeon currently works part-time for The Accel Group, an insurance agency, where he contributes to their data team by creating basic visualizations and interactive dashboards to format data that helps business leaders in the company make better data-informed decisions. This internship has offered him significant hands-on experience that will be valuable as he continues his career journey.
During his time at Mount Mercy, Simeon has been fortunate to build several valuable connections that have further enriched his academic experience. He said professors like Dr. Robert Todd and Dr. James Jacobs have played a significant role in driving him to reach his academic potential.
“They’ve both really pushed and challenged me to become a better version of myself,” Simeon explained. “I’m learning a lot of applicable skills from both the computer science and math programs.”
Simeon was also fortunate to receive guidance from a former teammate, so he understands the value of making connections that will enhance each individual’s Mount Mercy experience. With students from all over the world, Simeon said the relationships formed on the Hill can open doors to future internships and job opportunities, helping build a strong foundation for long-term success.
Beyond academics and golf, Simeon has also immersed himself in student leadership. He serves as the Vice President of Finance for the Student Activities Board (SAB), is an active member of the Honors Program, and represents the golf team on the Council for Student Athletes. As a representative on that council, he works to enhance the student-athlete experience at Mount Mercy, ensuring all voices are heard.
When asked if he was glad to have chosen Mount Mercy, Simeon answered with a resounding “yes.”
“I’ve made great friends, had an awesome experience on the golf team, and learned valuable skills through my education.”
