Teaching Licensure Pathway (Second Degree)
Following her Passion
By taking advantage of the MMU Plus program, Ashley Studt '22 is gaining more experience and knowledge in graduate-level courses as an undergraduate student.
MMU: What attracted you to Mount Mercy? Why did you decide to enroll in the accelerated program and the second-degree teaching licensure pathway?
AS: I was interested in getting my teacher’s license to further a career in the school district. I was paraprofessional at an elementary school and loved being there. I had a lot of support from the teachers there encouraging me to get my teaching license. They wanted me to succeed in the role of a teacher. Some of the teachers pointed me in the direction to MMU because they heard great things about the program. Additionally, MMU was the only program to offer a teacher licensure pathway.
MMU: What has your experience in the accelerated program been like? What has enabled you to be successful?
AS: So far, my experience in the accelerated program has been good. The professors are great to work with and do a great job encouraging you on your journey becoming a teacher. If I have question about a specific concept or topic, I’m able to email my professor and get a response quickly. The professors are great about making sure you understand the content and help you in any area you struggle with.

MMU: How did you hear about the MMU Plus program? What was your reaction to hearing about the program?
AS: I heard about the MMU plus program online, and it was nice to know that I can attend school in my 30’s and be able to get my licensure in a feasible timeframe.
MMU: What do you see as the main benefit from participating in the MMU Plus program? Would you recommend it to students who aren’t currently planning on pursuing a graduate degree?
AS: The main benefit for me about participating in the MMU Plus program is that I can earn my teacher’s license without having to repeat any of previous courses that I have taken. I would recommend it to people who decide to make a career change, which is why I'm doing it. After years being a field that I liked, an opportunity was given to me explore a different career path that I like even more.
MMU: What are some clear takeaways you have from the MAEd classes so far?
AS: It is a lot of hard work and dedication, but with encouraging professors and classmates you can do it.
