Spiritual Life

The Department of Mission and Ministry works in collaboration with other departments across campus to strengthen Mount Mercy University’s Catholic, Mercy identity. We respond to the diversity of our campus by integrating faith, service and learning within the richness of a vibrant welcoming community. We are dedicated to supporting the spiritual development and exploration of all individuals, regardless of their faith traditions or worldviews. We journey with students as they discover and strengthen their gifts so that they can lend a helping hand to create positive change.

About Campus Ministry

Reflecting the Catholic roots of Mount Mercy University and the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, Campus Ministry welcomes students of all faith backgrounds, as well as those who are still exploring their spiritual lives. Our programs are designed to foster deep spiritual development and create opportunities for personal growth through faith, worship, and service.

Growing in knowledge and prayer are vital components of an engaged faith life. Students will have opportunities to learn through Bible studies, retreats, interfaith events, liturgical ministry and prayer services. Spiritual direction is offered for students who are looking for one-on-one guidance along their journey. The Campus Ministry staff is available to listen and pray with students.

“Find joy in serving others.” - Catherine McAuley

Motivated by Jesus’ example, our rich Mercy heritage and Catholic social teaching, we embrace the call to serve. Students engage in service-learning and volunteer projects that foster personal growth while benefiting our local and global community. We have offered service trips to Los Angeles, St. Louis, Memphis, Romania, Guatemala and more during fall break, winter semester (J-Term) and spring break.

The Campus Ministry lounge is a great place to do homework, socialize with others, enjoy a cup of tea and play games. All are welcome in Campus Ministry.

Prayer & Worship

Prayer and worship are central elements of any faith. For Catholics, the celebration of the Eucharist is the source and summit of the community’s life and mission. Everyone at Mount Mercy University is welcome to join us for mass and prayer in the Chapel of Mercy in Busse Center.

Reconciliation schedule

The sevens sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1131). The sacrament of reconciliation is one of the healing sacraments and celebrates the loving embrace of God when we turn toward him and away from our sins.

“We should be as the compass that goes round its circle without stirring from its center. Our center is God, from whom all our actions should spring as from their source.” - Catherine McAuley

Prayer opportunities

The Chapel of Mercy is open Monday - Friday 7:00 AM-10:00 PM for prayer. We invite all to stop in for a few minutes to center yourself. On the first Thursday of every month, we offer Eucharistic adoration at 6:30 PM. We host interfaith, advent and lenten prayer services throughout the year.

Peer Ministry

Peer Ministers is a unique program that Mount Mercy University offers through the Department of Mission and Ministry. Our goal is to empower students to become disciples of Christ by leading weekly Bible studies, plan social events, help with retreats, organize service experiences and assist with liturgies. They encourage and enable the spiritual growth of other students. Peer Ministers are active in their faith and encourage others to grow in their faith and to share their gifts. These student leaders receive regular training and help to create and implement the vision for what we offer through Campus Ministry.

“Develop a heart of compassion and a spirit of generosity.” - Catherine McAuley
